Traditional Scottish pub in Edinburgh

The "Ghillie Dhu" in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a historic pub and restaurant that has established itself as a unique meeting place in the West End of the city. It is located in a beautifully restored former church, whose historic architecture, featuring high vaulted ceilings, original stone walls, and large windows, provides an impressive backdrop. The venue has made a name for itself by celebrating Scottish culture – whether through its ambiance, live music, or a kitchen that proudly showcases the finest ingredients from Scotland's larder. It attracts a diverse mix of locals, tourists, and party-goers looking for either a relaxed meal or a lively night of music and dance.

The interior of the "Ghillie Dhu" is versatile and inviting. On the ground floor, the main bar features cozy nooks and large tables, ideal for groups or a casual evening. Here, daily live music from local talents creates a vibrant atmosphere, while large screens show important sports broadcasts. The upper area, known as the "Auditorium," is a stunning space with high ceilings and chandeliers that is often used for private events such as weddings or ceilidhs – traditional Scottish dance evenings that have made the pub particularly famous. For those who want to enjoy the fresh air, there is a small outdoor area that offers views of the city and is a welcome addition on warm days.

Scottish cuisine with live music

The menu is a feast for lovers of Scottish cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh, local produce. The Slow Roast Pork Belly is especially popular, featuring tender, slow-cooked pork served with a rich sauce that delights with its intense flavor. The Steak & Ale Pie is also a favorite – a hearty classic with a crispy crust and an aromatic filling that pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes. For seafood fans, the Cullen Skink is a cherished choice, a creamy soup made from smoked haddock that conveys warmth and comfort. For dessert, the Sticky Toffee Pudding tempts with its sweet, warm indulgence topped with caramel sauce, often described as the perfect end to an evening at the "Ghillie Dhu." The drink selection is equally impressive, boasting a variety of whiskies – including special whisky flights – as well as homemade cocktails and a wide range of ales.

Weddings at Ghillie Dhu Edinburgh

Service is often described as friendly and attentive, with a team that strives to keep things running smoothly even during busy times – such as on ceilidh nights or during sports broadcasts. The option to order via an app makes the process easier and is appreciated by many guests. However, on particularly busy days, there can be waiting times, and some visitors report that the noise level in the main area can occasionally be high. The pub is family-friendly, with small amenities such as coloring sets for children, and is also dog-friendly, making it a popular stop after a walk.

Friendly service in Edinburgh pub

Guest experiences are predominantly positive, with the unique atmosphere, quality of food, and live music often highlighted. However, there are occasional criticisms: some complain that dishes are not always served hot, or that cleanliness can sometimes be lacking when the pub is full – for example, in the restrooms. Nonetheless, the "Ghillie Dhu" remains a place valued for its consistency and Scottish character. It has made a name for itself as one of the best venues for smaller events in Scotland and has received multiple awards.

A special aspect of the "Ghillie Dhu" is its connection to Scottish folklore – the name comes from a mythical forest spirit described in old tales as a nocturnal protector of nature. This mystical touch is reflected in the ambiance and is enhanced by the regular ceilidhs that introduce guests to the world of Scottish dance. Its location in the West End makes it an ideal starting point for an evening in Edinburgh, and its proximity to key transport links increases accessibility.

We went in here for a beer because it was a old church and we thought it looked cool. When you come it’s not that cool actually. Empty pub and soulless pub unfortunately.

I came here last night for the Valentine’s ceilidh, and had such a great time! The manager, Dorin, was especially helpful, really kind and friendly! Will definitely come back for an event here

We came to watch the first weekend of the Six Nations. Atmosphere was brilliant, good friendly vibes (even to the only England fan in the bar!) The staff were welcoming and there was an extensive selection of drinks. The food was nice but only a limited menu (but adequate). All in all, a great afternoon/evening.

Unfortunately Ghillie Dhu have a very rigid cancellation policy. 14 days seems a tad excessive. No refunds and no transfers. Therefore be very sure you’ll turn up before you put a deposit down. Additionally the customer service team showed zero empathy, disappointing

The bar is clean, unique, well decorated. What I liked the most was Jubel beer with its peach flavor

What a disappointment. Looking on the menus on Internet and on the photos in google, it looks amazing. We went there on a 6 nations day and discovered that there is a limited menu choice for that day. Fine... we took a sharer board and a pie. The sharer board was ok. Nothing amazing, it tastes industrial. The pie was terrible. It is just beef put in a bowl with a pita bread on the top, far from an average pie. Conclusion: nice for a drink but do not go to eat there on 6 nations day.

Attended the Burns Night Supper on the Friday night. Whilst the atmosphere was fabulous and the ceilidh band a hoot, the food was well below par for the price of the ticket. Ghillie Dhu has such a great reputation and we felt let down by the standard of the meal. The venison was overcooked and very tough. Sadly the presentation also lacked. That said, the staff were very friendly. We suspect there were staff shortages and that was the reason for the food being disappointing. It should have perhaps been recognised by the venue.

Attended for Burns night supper. Fun & amiable piper, who kicked things off well. Food was OK; felt rather rushed for the price we'd paid. Live music during dinner was over 80dB consistently. Asked staff on 3 separate occasions to turn it down, not even by much, and constantly reassured it would be - however, the atmospheric soundmeter i use for work doesnt lie!! I usually enjoy live music, but it was persistently obnoxious. Will not be back; thoroughly ruined the experience. Shame 🤷‍♂️

The food was good enough, the service was pretty prompt, the music was far too loud during dinner. I enjoy a bit of live music and the musician was very good but they were too loud. When I'm eating and getting notifications on apple watch that the music is going to damage my hearing, that's not great. We asked twice for the volume to be turned down and they failed to do that even slightly.
